This story takes place in the stale
and bureaucratic atmosphere
of a customs house, where we
follow the working day of the
civil servants as they ensure the
law relating to merchandise is
obeyed, examine the contents of
parcels and request passengers
to produce relevant identification.
Their job is not a pleasant task in
a world without frontiers. These
government officials tend to be
rather fussy people who carry
out the letter of the law. But what
would happen if one day these
scruples prevented them allowing
through anyone who did not
conform to a specific profile?
What would we lose? What would
the end of the story be? In a
world which is more and more
marked by people coming and
going, formulating the answer to
these questions can help to guide
us through life.
